Melissa (Thomas)
Ware ('87) and John Ware ('87) |
Melissa (Thomas) Ware ('87) established the John & Melissa Ware
Memorial Scholarship at Truman in memory of her husband and
longtime Bulldog coach, John Ware ('87). Coach Ware served 19
seasons (1985-2003) on the football coaching staff at Truman,
including nine seasons as head coach. He died of a heart attack
Sept. 27, 2005, at the age of 46.
John
received a bachelor's degree from Drake in 1981 and a master's
degree from Truman in 1987, both in psychology. He was a member
of the football team at Drake University (Iowa), where he was an
all-America and first-team all-conference offensive lineman. In
1981, he signed with the San Francisco Forty Niners as a free
agent and played in four exhibition games before getting cut.
John's accomplishments at Truman include: 12 winning seasons, 85
victories, coaching four offensive linemen to all-American
status, helping recruit five other all-Americans to Truman.
Melissa was also a 1987 graduate of Truman State University and began working for the University full-time as publications coordinator and office manager in August of 1988. In 1995, Melissa was named sports information director, and she served in that capacity until May 2004 when she moved to Joplin, Mo., after her husband accepted the head football coaching position at Missouri Southern State University. She died Nov. 20, 2007, following a long illness.
The John & Melissa Ware Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a member of the Truman State University football squad who has earned at least two letters, received the highest grade point average from the previous year and has an unwavering commitment to the Bulldog family.
