Celebrating The First 50 Years

Celebrating 50 years of community service, the clinic benefits approximately 1,000 people annually, 80 percent of whom are children. The clinic serves clients of all ages, at no cost, an arrangement that is rare, even among university clinics. [The clinic draws clients from a 100-mile radius including the larger community of northeast Missouri because comparable services are scarce in this region.] The clinic is viewed as an important regional source for continuing education and expert consultation. Faculty and students from the clinic collaborate with Head Start, First Steps, hospitals, and school systems throughout the region. Referrals are accepted from local physicians, schools, Parents as Teachers, and local group homes.

The Speech and Hearing Clinic provides Truman Communication Disorders students the opportunity to learn in a hands-on environment. Students observe therapy, then become clinical assistants, and eventually assume the responsibilities of student clinicians when they meet the academic requirements. Under the guidance of certified faculty, students test and treat clients for various speech, hearing, and communicative disorders. Services include intervention for language, articulation, early literacy, voice, fluency, and aural rehabilitation.

Many Truman CMDS undergraduates continue their studies at the graduate level. Students with a graduate degree from Truman meet requirements for State of Missouri licensure and national certification from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.
